Here is a comprehensive breakdown of liquid acrylic medium, what it is, how it differs from other acrylics, and how to use it. What is Liquid Acrylic Medium? In simple terms, liquid acrylic medium is acrylic paint without the pigment. It consists of an acrylic polymer emulsion (the binder) and water. Think of it as the "glue" that holds pigment together in regular paint. When you buy a tube of acrylic paint, it's roughly 70-80% medium and 20-30% pigment. Liquid medium is that same 100% binder, allowing you to manipulate the paint's consistency, transparency, and texture without weakening its adhesive or durability. Key Properties & How They Differ from Other Acrylics Feature Liquid Acrylic Medium Regular Acrylic Paint Heavy Body Acrylic : : : : Consistency Thin, pourable (like milk or cream) Thick, buttery paste Very thick, like soft butter Pigment None (clear or milky white when wet, clear when dry) High concentration High concentration Finish Gloss, Satin, or Matte (depending on type) Usually Gloss or Satin Usually Gloss or Satin Primary Use Extending paint, creating glazes, sealing, pouring Painting, impasto Thick textures, impasto Crucial Note: Liquid medium dries clear and glossy (unless labeled "matte"). It remains water-resistant when dry, just like regular acrylics. Common Types of Liquid Acrylic Medium Gloss Medium & Varnish - Use: Increases gloss, transparency, and flow. Can be used as a final varnish for non-porous surfaces (it becomes a permanent layer, so it's a "varnish" in the sense of a final coat, but it's not removable like a mineral spirit varnish). - Best for: Glazing (thin, transparent layers), sealing collages, creating a high-shine finish. Matte Medium - Use: Reduces gloss, increases transparency, and creates a flat, non-reflective finish. Often contains fine silica to scatter light. - Best for: Eliminating glare in artwork, giving a "watercolor-like" matte finish, sealing with no shine. Satin Medium - Use: A middle ground between gloss and matte. - Best for: A subtle, natural-looking sheen. Flow Improver / Flow Release (Not a true medium, but related) - Use: A liquid additive that reduces surface tension, making paint flow more easily and preventing brush strokes. - Key Difference: It is NOT a binder. It cannot be used alone to extend paint without weakening it. It's used in small drops. How to Use Liquid Acrylic Medium (The "Why") Extending Paint (Stretching Your Budget) Problem: Acrylic paint dries fast and is expensive. Solution: Mix 1 part paint with 1 part liquid medium. You get twice the volume without changing the paint's adhesive strength or durability. The color will be more transparent, but the film strength remains the same. Creating Glazes (The Most Important Use) What it is: A thin, transparent layer of color that modifies the layer below. How to do it: Mix a small amount of paint with a large amount of liquid medium (e.g., 1:10 ratio). Apply it over dry paint. This allows you to subtly shift color (e.g., turning a blue sky slightly purple) without covering the texture beneath. Improving Flow & Reducing Brush Strokes Problem: Straight paint leaves visible brush marks. Solution: Mix paint with liquid medium instead of water. Water weakens the binder and can cause "beading" on a palette. Medium thins the paint without breaking it down, resulting in smoother, more even coats. Adhesive for Collage & Decoupage Use: Apply a thin layer of medium to the surface, lay down your paper, then apply another layer on top. Why it works: It acts as both glue and sealant. It dries clear, flexible, and archival. Gloss medium is excellent for this. The "Puddle" Technique (Acrylic Pouring) Use: Mixed with paint and a pouring agent (like silicone oil) to create a fluid consistency that allows colors to spread and "cells" to form when poured onto a canvas. Why not water? Water alone would make the paint too weak and prone to cracking. Medium provides the body needed to hold the shape of the puddle. Sealing & Varnishing (Not for Oil Paintings) Use: Apply a final, even coat of gloss or matte medium over your finished acrylic painting. Effect: Unifies the surface (removes "dry spots" from different paint sheens) and protects the paint from dust and UV light (if labeled "UV resistant"). Important: This is a permanent varnish. It cannot be removed without damaging the painting. For a removable, museum-quality varnish, use a dedicated mineral spirit-based varnish. The Critical Rule: NEVER USE WATER AS A THINNER FOR GLAZES This is the most common mistake. Many beginners add water to make paint "watery" for glazes. Do not do this. Water dilutes the acrylic binder. If you add more than 30-50% water, the paint film becomes weak, brittle, and prone to peeling or cracking. Always use liquid medium to thin paint for transparent layers. Simple Analogy Think of acrylic paint as lemonade concentrate: Pigment = Lemon flavor Liquid Medium = Water + Sugar (The binder that makes it "real" lemonade) Water alone = Water (You get a watery, flavorless mess) Adding liquid medium is like adding more water and sugar to your concentrateyou get more lemonade of the same strength. Adding water alone is like just adding wateryou get a weak, insipid drink. Summary: When to Use It Do you want to make your paint go further? Use Medium. Do you want a transparent layer that doesn't crack? Use Medium. Do you want a smooth, even wash? Use Medium. Do you want to glue paper down? Use Medium. Do you want a hard, water-resistant seal? Use Medium. Final Tip: Buy a bottle of Gloss Medium & Varnish as your first liquid medium. It's the most versatile. You can always add a little matte medium to it later to reduce the shine.

Great raids, some bugs

The new raid content is fantastic with challenging mechanics. However, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out. Overall a solid expansion that keeps me coming back for more.
