Ultima Online (U7O) - 1997: The Dawn of MMORPGs Released in September 1997 by Origin Systems (under Electronic Arts), Ultima Online (UO) revolutionized gaming by creating the first commercially successful massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). Set in the rich fantasy world of Britannia from the Ultima single-player series, UO offered unprecedented freedom, player-driven economies, and emergent gameplay that still influences modern MMOs. Key Features of UO (1997) Open-World Sandbox - No classes or rigid progressionplayers could mix skills (swordsmanship, magic, crafting) freely. - Full loot drops upon death (including player killers stealing gear). - Housing: Players could buy land and build customizable houses (a first for MMOs). Player-Driven Economy - Crafting (blacksmithing, tailoring, alchemy) was essential, with supply/demand dictating prices. - Scarcity of resources (e.g., rare ore) led to competition and even scams (e.g., "bank chest thefts"). PvP & Consequences - Open PvP: Murderers ("PKs" or "red players") became outlaws, hunted by guards and bounty hunters. - Reputation System: "Karma" and "Fame" tracked player actions, affecting NPC reactions. Emergent Gameplay - Players formed guilds, ran shops, and staged events (e.g., weddings, duels). - Famous exploits: "The Corrupt AFK Mayor" (a player-elected NPC controlled by a PK guild). Technical Limitations & Quirks - Dial-up connections: Lag spikes led to "connection lost" deaths. - Server shards: Different rulesets (e.g., Great Lakes for RP, Siege Perilous for hardcore PvP). Legacy Pioneered MMORPG Mechanics: UO inspired EverQuest, World of Warcraft, and EVE Online. Still Active: Official servers (now Ultima Online: Endless Journey) and private shards (e.g., UO Outlands) thrive. Cultural Impact: Terms like "gank," "grind," and "MMO" trace roots to UO. Fun Fact: The infamous "Lord British" (Richard Garriotts in-game avatar) was "assassinated" during a public event due to a programming oversighta glitch allowed a player to one-shot him! Would you like details on private servers, gameplay tips, or UOs lore?

The War Within brings so much fresh content to WoW. The new zones are absolutely stunning and the storyline is engaging. Been playing for 15 years and this expansion reignited my passion for the game.
The new raid content is fantastic with challenging mechanics. However, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out. Overall a solid expansion that keeps me coming back for more.
