The first Role-Playing Game (RPG) depends on how you define "RPG." Here are the key milestones in RPG history: Tabletop RPGs (Pre-Digital Era) Dungeons & Dragons (1974) Created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, D&D was the first commercially available tabletop RPG, establishing core mechanics like character stats, classes, and dungeon exploration. Earlier Influences: Games like Chainmail (1971, a wargame) and Braunstein (1960s, experimental storytelling games) inspired D&D. Computer RPGs (Early Digital RPGs) DND (1975) A text-based dungeon crawler for PLATO mainframes, inspired by D&D. Akalabeth: World of Doom (1980) Created by Richard Garriott (later of Ultima fame), it featured dungeon crawling and open-world elements. Rogue (1980) A dungeon-crawler with procedural generation, inspiring the "roguelike" genre. Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (1981) & Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness (1981) These games defined early CRPG mechanics (turn-based combat, stats, quests). Console RPGs Dragonstomper (1982, Atari 2600) One of the first RPGs on consoles. Dragon Quest (1986, NES) Popularized JRPGs in Japan. Final Fantasy (1987, NES) Helped globalize JRPGs. The War Within brings so much fresh content to WoW. The new zones are absolutely stunning and the storyline is engaging. Been playing for 15 years and this expansion reignited my passion for the game.
The new raid content is fantastic with challenging mechanics. However, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out. Overall a solid expansion that keeps me coming back for more.
