The 1990s were a golden era for RPG (Role-Playing Games), with many classics that defined the genre. Heres a breakdown of some of the most influential RPGs from the '90s: Western RPGs (WRPGs) Ultima VII: The Black Gate (1992) A deep, open-world RPG with rich storytelling. Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven (1998) First-person party-based dungeon crawling. The Elder Scrolls: Arena (1994) & Daggerfall (1996) Early open-world RPGs that laid the foundation for later TES games. Fallout (1997) & Fallout 2 (1998) Post-apocalyptic turn-based RPGs with deep choices. Baldurs Gate (1998) A revolutionary D&D-based CRPG by BioWare. Planescape: Torment (1999) A philosophical, story-driven masterpiece. Japanese RPGs (JRPGs) Final Fantasy VI (III in US) (1994) One of the best SNES RPGs with an epic story. Chrono Trigger (1995) Time-traveling masterpiece by Square. Final Fantasy VII (1997) The game that brought JRPGs to mainstream audiences. Xenogears (1998) A deep, philosophical mecha RPG. Suikoden II (1998) A political JRPG with 108 recruitable characters. The Legend of Dragoon (1999) A PS1 RPG with a unique combat system. Breath of Fire III (1997) A great dragon-themed JRPG on PS1. Tactical RPGs (SRPGs) Shining Force II (1993) A Sega Genesis SRPG with grid-based combat. Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War (1996) A deep tactical RPG for SNES (Japan-only). Final Fantasy Tactics (1997) A deep, political strategy RPG by Square. Vandal Hearts (1996) A lesser-known but solid tactical RPG. Action RPGs (ARPGs) Secret of Mana (1993) A real-time action RPG with multiplayer. Seiken Densetsu 3 (Trials of Mana) (1995) A Japan-only SNES classic (later remade). Diablo (1996) The game that popularized loot-based ARPGs. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991) More action-adventure but with RPG elements. Terranigma (1995) A lesser-known but fantastic action RPG. Honorable Mentions Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (1995) A great SNES RPG with puzzle dungeons. Grandia (1997) A charming PS1/Saturn RPG with a unique battle system. Parasite Eve (1998) A horror-themed RPG with real-time combat. Vagrant Story (2000, but close enough) A deep, dark PS1 RPG with tactical combat. Why Were '90s RPGs Special? Deep storytelling (Planescape, FFVI, Xenogears). Innovative mechanics (Chrono Triggers combo attacks, Diablos loot system). Pixel art & early 3D (FFVIIs transition to 3D). Strong character development (Suikoden II, Baldurs Gate). The War Within brings so much fresh content to WoW. The new zones are absolutely stunning and the storyline is engaging. Been playing for 15 years and this expansion reignited my passion for the game.
The new raid content is fantastic with challenging mechanics. However, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out. Overall a solid expansion that keeps me coming back for more.
