The 2000s were a golden era for MMORPGs, with many classic titles launching and shaping the genre. Here are some of the most iconic old MMORPGs from the 2000s: Early 2000s (20002004) EverQuest (1999, but peaked in early 2000s) One of the first 3D MMORPGs, setting the standard for future games. Dark Age of Camelot (2001) Introduced Realm vs. Realm (RvR) PvP. RuneScape (2001) Browser-based, simple but addictive, still running today. Anarchy Online (2001) Sci-fi MMORPG with cyberpunk elements. Final Fantasy XI (2002 in Japan, 2003 in NA/EU) First MMORPG in the FF series. Star Wars Galaxies (2003) Sandbox-style with deep crafting and player housing (shut down in 2011). Lineage II (2003 in Korea, 2004 in NA/EU) Massive open-world PvP and castle sieges. City of Heroes (2004) Superhero-themed with deep character customization (shut down in 2012, revived by private servers). Mid-to-Late 2000s (20052009) World of Warcraft (2004, but dominated the 2000s) The most influential MMORPG ever. Guild Wars (2005) Unique instanced world with no subscription fee. Dungeons & Dragons Online (2006) Based on D&D 3.5 ruleset. Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (2007) Ambitious but flawed, shut down in 2014. Lord of the Rings Online (2007) Still running today with expansions. Age of Conan (2008) Brutal combat and mature themes. Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (2008) Great RvR PvP (shut down in 2013, revived by private server Return of Reckoning). Aion (2008 in Korea, 2009 in NA/EU) Beautiful world with aerial combat. EVE Online (2003, but grew in late 2000s) Hardcore space sandbox with player-driven economy. Honorable Mentions (Lesser-Known but Still Notable) Tibia (1997, but still active in the 2000s) One of the oldest MMORPGs. Ultima Online (1997, but still had a strong playerbase in the 2000s) The grandfather of MMORPGs. Shadowbane (2003) Full-loot PvP with player-built cities (shut down in 2009). RF Online (2004 in Korea, 2006 in NA) Sci-fi with faction wars. FlyFF (Fly For Fun) (2004 in Korea, 2005 in NA) Anime-style with flying mounts. Which Ones Are Still Playable Today? RuneScape (Old School RuneScape available) World of Warcraft (Classic & Retail) EVE Online Lord of the Rings Online Guild Wars (now Guild Wars 1, still playable but no new content) Final Fantasy XI (still running with a small playerbase) Private Servers (e.g., Return of Reckoning for Warhammer, SWGEmu for Star Wars Galaxies) Would you like recommendations based on a specific playstyle (PvP, PvE, sandbox, etc.)?

The War Within brings so much fresh content to WoW. The new zones are absolutely stunning and the storyline is engaging. Been playing for 15 years and this expansion reignited my passion for the game.
The new raid content is fantastic with challenging mechanics. However, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out. Overall a solid expansion that keeps me coming back for more.
