Heres a breakdown of J. Mark Acrylic Paint (often written as JMark or J. Mark), covering what it is, where it fits in the market, and how to use it. What is J. Mark Acrylic Paint? J. Mark is a brand of student-grade acrylic paint, typically sold in large sets (24, 36, 48 colors) at a very affordable price point (often under 20-30). It is extremely popular on Amazon, in craft stores, and with beginners. The Core Identity: Target Audience: Beginners, students, hobbyists, crafters, children, and anyone learning to paint on a tight budget. Competition: It directly competes with other budget brands like Apple Barrel, FolkArt, Arteza, Castle Art, and Sargent Art. Quality Level: It is a student-grade paint, not professional/artist grade (like Golden, Liquitex, or Winsor & Newton). Key Characteristics & Performance Feature Description : : Consistency Medium-thick. Usually thinner out of the bottle than heavy-body professional paints. Good for base coating, crafts, and layering. Not ideal for heavy impasto (thick texture) techniques. Pigmentation Good for the price, but not high-end. You'll get decent color payoff. Some lighter colors (white, light yellow) may require more coats to achieve full opacity. Coverage Moderate to Good. Most colors cover well in 2-3 coats. Darker colors generally have excellent coverage. Drying Time Fast. Like all acrylics, it dries quickly (within 10-30 minutes). Finish Matte to Satin. Most colors dry with a flat, non-reflective finish, which is great for painting without glare. Lightfastness Low to Moderate. This is a major trade-off for the low price. The colors may fade over time if exposed to direct sunlight. Not suitable for fine art intended to last for decades. Adhesion Good on porous surfaces (canvas, paper, wood, cardboard). Needs primer on non-porous surfaces (glass, plastic, metal). Mixing It mixes well with other acrylic paints (including other brands). Colors blend smoothly. Toxicity Non-toxic. Safe for children (always check the label for ASTM D-4236 certification). Smell Very low to no odor. Pros and Cons Pros: Extremely Affordable: The biggest selling point. You can get a huge color range for very little money. Great for Beginners: Perfect for learning color mixing, brush control, and basic techniques without a big investment. Large Color Selection: Sets often include unique and fun colors (neons, metallics, pastels, earth tones). Versatile for Crafts: Excellent for DIY projects, school projects, painting rocks, signs, furniture (with sealer), and simple canvases. Low Odor & Non-Toxic: Safe for use around kids and pets. Easy Cleanup: Soap and water. Cons: Lower Pigment Load: You need more paint and more coats for full opacity compared to professional paints. Can Be Chalky: Some colors, especially light ones, can feel slightly chalky or pasty when dry. Not for Fine Art: The lightfastness is poor. Artwork will fade over time. Inconsistent Quality: Some colors may be more opaque or vibrant than others (batch variation is common in budget paints). Plastic Bottles: The bottles are often soft plastic, which can be messy to squeeze. They may also dry out if the cap isn't tightly sealed. What is J. Mark Good For? Learning to Paint: The best use case. Practice color theory, blending, and brush techniques. Crafting: Paint rocks, flower pots, wood signs, picture frames, and simple decorations. School Projects: Ideal for classroom use due to cost and non-toxicity. Base Coating: Great for priming or laying down large areas of color on canvas or models. Practice Canvases: Perfect for testing ideas before using expensive paints. Children's Art: Non-toxic and washable (though not fully washable like tempera). What is J. Mark NOT Good For? Professional Fine Art: If you want your painting to last for decades without fading. Thick Impasto Techniques: It's not thick enough to hold sharp peaks or heavy texture. Canvas for Sale: Not recommended for artwork you plan to sell to collectors who expect archival quality. Precise Detail Work: The consistency can sometimes be slightly inconsistent, making fine lines a bit tricky. Comparison to Other Budget Brands Brand Vibe Consistency Best For : : : : J. Mark Budget & Beginner Medium-thin, matte finish Learning, crafting, base coating Apple Barrel Classic Craft Thicker, satin finish Craft projects, canvas painting, school FolkArt Slightly Upmarket Craft Smooth, good pigmentation Decorative painting, glass, wood, tin Arteza Modern Hobbyist Creamy, good pigment All-around painting, abstract, mixed media Castle Art Artist Focused Hobby Rich pigment, thicker All-purpose hobby painting, good reviews Tips for Using J. Mark Acrylic Paint Use a Palette: Squeeze out a small amount at a time. Acrylic dries fast, so use a wet palette to keep the paint workable longer. Prime Your Surface: For best results, prime canvas or wood with gesso first. This improves adhesion and color vibrancy. Thin with Water: For washes or glazes, thin with a little water (max 30-50%). For airbrushing, thin with airbrush medium. Mix with Mediums: To improve body, add acrylic gel medium. For slower drying, use a retarder medium. Layer for Opacity: Don't expect one coat to be perfect. Apply thin, even coats. Let each dry completely before the next. Seal Your Work: Since lightfastness is low, always seal finished pieces with a UV-resistant varnish or sealant to protect the colors. Test First: Because of batch variation, test a color on scrap paper before painting your final piece. Verdict J. Mark acrylic paint is a fantastic value for its price point. It's not a replacement for professional-grade paint, but it's not trying to be. It's an excellent entry-level, learning, and crafting paint that offers a huge color range for very little money. Who should buy it: Beginners and students. Crafters on a budget. Parents for children's art projects. Anyone doing non-archival, temporary, or practice work. Who should skip it: Professional artists needing archival quality. Artists wanting heavy-body, thick impasto paint. Anyone selling artwork for a high price. In short: For the price, it's hard to beat. Just know its limitations and use it for what it's good for: having fun and learning to paint.

Great raids, some bugs

The new raid content is fantastic with challenging mechanics. However, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out. Overall a solid expansion that keeps me coming back for more.
