Fantasy MMORPG PvE Raids Guilds

Of course. Grand Strategy is a pinnacle genre in board gaming, characterized by deep, complex systems where players guide the development and fate of entire nations or civilizations over long historical sweeps. It's about long-term planning, resource management, diplomacy, and strategic (often military) dominance. Heres a breakdown of the genre, from classics to modern titles, and what to expect. Core Characteristics Scale: Empires, nations, or entire civilizations. Scope: Centuries of technological, economic, and territorial development. Complexity: High rules overhead. Games often take 4+ hours, sometimes spanning multiple sessions. Player Interaction: High, through diplomacy, trade, and inevitable conflict. Victory Conditions: Often multiple paths (military conquest, economic supremacy, technological achievement, cultural influence). The Titans (Classics & Heavyweights) These are the benchmarks of the genre, often with legendary playtimes and rulebooks. Twilight Imperium (4th Edition) The Pitch: The definitive space opera epic. Less historical, more Dune-like political drama. Players lead asymmetric alien races to control the galaxy through voting, trade, technology, and epic fleet battles. Key Features: Deep political negotiation, a modular galaxy, asymmetric factions, iconic "Command" action system. A full 6-player game is an 8-12 hour event. Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization The Pitch: Civilization-building in a card-driven, mostly abstracted format (no map movement). You manage resources, science, culture, military, and leaders from antiquity to the modern era. Key Features: Incredibly deep engine-building, agonizing decisions, indirect conflict. The digital implementation is superb for learning. Star Wars: Rebellion The Pitch: The Galactic Civil War in a box. The massive, asymmetric game of cat-and-mouse between the Galactic Empire (sheer strength) and the Rebel Alliance (guerrilla tactics and secrecy). Key Features: Hidden Rebel Base mechanic creates incredible tension. Epic thematic moments with iconic characters and units. War of the Ring (Second Edition) The Pitch: The Lord of the Rings trilogy as a grand strategy conflict. The Free Peoples try to survive and move the Fellowship to Mordor, while Sauron unleashes his armies. Key Features: Perfect marriage of theme and mechanics. Asymmetric, narrative-driven, with a brilliant "Action Dice" system that creates constant tension. Modern & Accessible Takes These games capture the grand strategy feel in (slightly) more manageable packages or with innovative systems. Root The Pitch: A grand strategy wargame disguised as a cute woodland conflict. Asymmetric factions (birds, cats, raccoons, lizards) vie for control of the forest with completely different mechanics and win conditions. Key Features: High interaction, brilliant asymmetry, dynamic politics. A masterclass in interactive, conflict-driven design. Scythe The Pitch: Alternate-history 1920s Europa with diesel-punk mechs. A blend of engine-building, area control, and resource management with the constant threat of combat. Key Features: Stunning art, efficient action selection system ("Action Board"), low-luck, and a focus on efficiency and intimidation over constant fighting. Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy The Pitch: A more streamlined, economic-focused space epic compared to Twilight Imperium. Explore hexes, research tech, build custom ships, and fight for control. Key Features: Brilliant resource management ("influence discs"), deep but intuitive ship customization, and a cleaner, faster pace than its heaviest competitors. The Historical Simulation Corner These games prioritize historical depth and simulation, often with incredible detail. Axis & Allies 1940 (Global): The classic WWII global conflict simulator. Manage production, research, and armies on a world map. More of a "war game" but at a grand strategic level. The COIN Series (e.g., Cuba Libre, Andean Abyss): Models asymmetric insurgencies and counter-insurgencies in historical conflicts. Extremely deep, with each faction having unique victory conditions and methods. Civilization: A New Dawn (with Terra Incognita expansion): A streamlined, card-driven take on the classic PC game, focusing on the highlights of empire growth. Before You Buy: Considerations & Tips Time Commitment: These are not casual games. Ensure your group is prepared. Complexity: Watch "how to play" videos (e.g., from RTFM, Watch It Played) before purchasing. Player Count: Most grand strategy games have a "sweet spot" player count (often 4-6). Some suffer at lower counts. Start with a Gateway: If you're new, consider starting with Scythe or Root before diving into Twilight Imperium. The Social Contract: These games involve conflict, negotiation, and sometimes betrayal. Play with people who understand it's part of the game. Where to Start? For a Thematic, All-Day Space Opera: Twilight Imperium 4E (if you have the group and time). For Deep, Card-Driven Civilization Building: Through the Ages (best played digitally first). For Asymmetric Warfare with Amazing Theme: War of the Ring (2P) or Star Wars: Rebellion (2P). For a Modern, Highly Interactive Entry Point: Root (best at 4 players). For Economic Strategy with a Threat of War: Scythe or Eclipse. Grand strategy board games offer some of the most memorable, epic experiences in the hobby. The investment in learning and time is rewarded with stories and moments that you'll talk about for years. Choose your civilization, marshal your forces, and prepare for the long game.

Great raids, some bugs

The new raid content is fantastic with challenging mechanics. However, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out. Overall a solid expansion that keeps me coming back for more.
