The Epic Games vs. Apple legal battle is a major antitrust case that began in 2020 and has reshaped the mobile app ecosystem. Heres a breakdown of the key points: Background The Dispute: Epic Games, maker of Fortnite, intentionally bypassed Apple's App Store payment system in August 2020 to avoid paying Apple's 30% commission on in-app purchases. Apple promptly removed Fortnite from the App Store for violating its rules. The Lawsuit: Epic sued Apple, alleging monopolistic behavior. Apple countersued for breach of contract. Core Issues App Store Monopoly: Epic argued Apple has an illegal monopoly on iOS app distribution and in-app payments. Commission Fees: Epic challenged Apple's 30% (15% for small developers) fee as excessive and anti-competitive. Developer Restrictions: Epic contested Apple's rules prohibiting alternative app stores and sideloading on iOS. The 2021 Trial & Ruling (Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers) The ruling was a mixed verdict, favoring neither side completely. Apple Won on Key Antitrust Claims: The court did not find Apple to be a monopolist in the relevant market (defined as "digital mobile gaming transactions"). Apple's 30% commission was not deemed illegal. Epic Won a Major Concession: The court issued a permanent injunction under California state law, forcing Apple to allow developers to include links and buttons in their apps directing users to alternative payment methods outside the App Store (often called "anti-steering" rules). This bypasses Apple's commission on those purchases. Aftermath & Appeals Both sides appealed. In April 2023, the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals largely upheld the original ruling. The Supreme Court declined to hear further appeals from either side in January 2024, letting the Ninth Circuit's decision stand. Current Status & Global Impact The "Anti-Steering" Injunction is in Effect: Apple has been forced to comply in the U.S., allowing developers to link to external websites for purchases. However, Apple still charges a commission (reduced to 27% or 12%) on purchases made through these links, which developers heavily criticize. Global Regulatory Pressure: The case fueled worldwide regulatory action: EU: The Digital Markets Act (DMA) now forces Apple to allow alternative app stores and sideloading in Europe. Other Countries: Similar rulings or laws have emerged in South Korea, Japan, and the Netherlands. The "Fortnite" Return: In January 2024, Apple approved Epic's developer account, allowing Fortnite to return to iOS in Europe in 2024 via the Epic Games Store. Its return to the U.S. App Store is still uncertain. Key Takeaways Not a Clear Win: Epic didn't break Apple's "walled garden" or get its 30% commission declared illegal in the U.S. A Significant Crack: The "anti-steering" injunction and global regulations have forced Apple to make its most substantial changes to the App Store since its inception. Ongoing Battle: The fight has moved from U.S. courts to global legislatures and regulatory bodies. The core tension between platform control, developer freedom, and security remains unresolved. In short, the case was a catalyst for change, weakening Apple's control but not dismantling its App Store model. The ultimate impact is still unfolding as new rules take effect globally.

Great raids, some bugs

The new raid content is fantastic with challenging mechanics. However, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out. Overall a solid expansion that keeps me coming back for more.
