The walls are not stone, but woven from shadows held in place by sheer silence. Floating in the center of the room, on a small pedestal of fossilized bone, is a single, perfect piece of jade. (The scene opens. LIAN is pressed against a wall of shadow, breathing hard. A thin line of blood traces from her temple. She is staring at the jade, her hand holding a complex, jade-lock key.) LIAN: (Whispering) Twelve scrolls. Three dead forgers. Two broken ribs. All for you. Just a little further... (She takes a step. The shadows on the floor do not move with her. They turn against the direction of her footfall. A voice, soft as dust settling, comes from everywhere and nowhere.) ZHEN (O.S.): You have already paid a heavy tax in pain, thief. Are you sure you wish to pay another? (Lian freezes. She doesn't turn.) LIAN: I didn't come to pay. I came to collect. (From the deepest shadow in the corner, ZHEN emerges. I am sorry you had to bleed to see clearly. (He lifts a hand. The shadow tightens. Lian feels it beginning to pull her into the wall, into the eternal silence. This is the price of pursuit. But she is a thief, and a thiefs mind is not broken, only outmaneuvered.) LIAN: (Suddenly calm) Youre right. I was blind. But youre blind, too. ZHEN: Oh? LIAN: You said the book was a lie. But you read the book of my heart. You saw my sister. My love. My desperation. You know me. I didn't know you. I didn't know you were guarding a poison. (A single tear falls from Lians eye. It lands on the shadow binding her. The shadow sizzles. A tiny hiss escapes it. Zhens eyes widen for the first time.) ZHEN: What? LIAN: Pure hope doesnt create light, old man. It creates heat. ZHEN: The pursuit of jade is always a pursuit of a reflection. Turn your gaze, and find the source. (The shadow door closes. The jade hums to itself in the empty darkness.
