Here is a curated list of the most iconic and influential drama TV shows from the 1980s and 1990s, broken down by genre and era. These shows defined the landscape of television, moving from the "jiggle TV" of the 80s to the prestige, serialized storytelling of the late 90s. The 1980s: The Era of Prime-Time Soaps & Procedurals The 80s were dominated by high-concept, glossy dramas, often featuring wealthy families, medical heroes, and iconic law enforcement. Family & Prime-Time Soaps Dallas (1978-1991) - The quintessential 80s soap. The saga of the Ewing family, oil, and betrayal. Famous for the "Who shot J.R.?" cliffhanger. Dynasty (1981-1989) - The glittering, glamorous rival to Dallas. The Carrington-Colby feud was a global phenomenon, defined by big hair, shoulder pads, and catfights. Knots Landing (1979-1993) - A more grounded, character-driven spin-off of Dallas that many critics consider the best of the genre. Focused on four couples in a California cul-de-sac. Falcon Crest (1981-1990) - A soap opera set in California's wine country, starring Jane Wyman as the matriarch of a powerful winemaking family. Law & Criminal Drama Hill Street Blues (1981-1987) - A groundbreaking show that revolutionized TV drama with its documentary-style, ensemble cast, and interweaving storylines. It was gritty, realistic, and won a record number of Emmys. Miami Vice (1984-1990) - Defining 80s style, music, and attitude. Undercover detectives Crockett and Tubbs fought drug lords in pastel suits and fast cars, set to a chart-topping soundtrack. L.A. Law (1986-1994) - The definitive legal drama of the 80s. It balanced high-profile cases with the personal lives of its attorneys, mixing serious issues with sharp, witty dialogue. Cagney & Lacey (1982-1988) - Groundbreaking for its portrayal of two female NYPD detectives. It was a critically acclaimed, realistic drama that tackled social issues. Medical & Sci-Fi St. Elsewhere (1982-1988) - A medical drama known for its dark humor, complex characters, and surreal, iconic finale. It launched the careers of Denzel Washington and Mark Harmon. The Cosby Show (1984-1992) While primarily a sitcom, its dramatic storylines about family, race, and class made it a cultural touchstone. The A-Team (1983-1987) - Pure 80s action. Mercenaries on the run help the underdog. "I love it when a plan comes together." MacGyver (1985-1992) - A problem-solving action hero who used science and ingenuity instead of guns. The phrase "MacGyver it" entered the lexicon. The 1990s: The Rise of Prestige & Serialized TV The 90s saw a shift toward serialized, darker, and more complex storytelling, paving the way for the "Golden Age of Television." The Watercooler Shows (The "Big Four") Twin Peaks (1990-1991, 2017) - A revolutionary, surreal mystery series by David Lynch. "Who killed Laura Palmer?" captivated the world and changed TV forever. The X-Files (1993-2002, 2016-2018) - The monster-of-the-week and global conspiracy show. FBI agents Mulder and Scully chased aliens, cryptids, and the truth. "I want to believe." ER (1994-2009) - The most influential medical drama ever. Frantic, realistic, and intensely emotional. It made stars of George Clooney, Noah Wyle, and Julianna Margulies. NYPD Blue (1993-2005) - A gritty, raw, and acclaimed police drama known for its handheld camera work, profanity, and nudity. It pushed the boundaries of network TV. Classic Procedurals & Crime Law & Order (1990-2010, 2022-Present) - The definitive "ripped from the headlines" police procedural and legal drama. Its two-part, "bada-bing" format is legendary. Homicide: Life on the Street (1993-1999) - A masterpiece from the creator of The Wire. It was more realistic and introspective than NYPD Blue, focusing on the detectives of Baltimore. Murder, She Wrote (1984-1996) - While starting in the 80s, this cozy mystery starring Angela Lansbury as amateur sleuth Jessica Fletcher peaked in the 90s. Sci-Fi & Fantasy Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994) - While it began in the 80s, it defined the 90s. Picard, Data, and the Enterprise-D explored deep philosophical questions. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-1999) - The darkest, most serialized Trek. Set on a space station, it tackled war, religion, and politics with incredible depth. Babylon 5 (1993-1998) - A five-year planned arc about interstellar politics and war. It was a direct competitor to DS9 and is a cult-classic for its ambitious storytelling. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) - A genre-bending masterpiece. Metaphor for teenage angst, female empowerment, and growing up, wrapped in a horror-comedy package. Teen & Melodrama Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-2000) - The show that created the "teen drama" genre. The lives of rich kids at West Beverly Hills High School. My So-Called Life (1994-1995) - A critically adored, one-season wonder that perfectly captured the angst and confusion of adolescence. Starring a teenage Claire Danes. Party of Five (1994-2000) - The Salinger siblings struggle to raise themselves after their parents die in a car accident. A deeply emotional and respected family drama. Touched by an Angel (1994-2003) - A wholesome, uplifting drama about angels helping people. A huge ratings hit for CBS. Honorable Mentions The West Wing (1999-2006) - While it started right at the end of the 90s, it's the definitive political drama and a masterpiece of fast-paced dialogue. Tales from the Crypt (1989-1996) - A horror anthology hosted by a puppet corpse. Darkly comedic and influential. Northern Exposure (1990-1995) - A quirky, philosophical dramedy set in a small Alaskan town. Won many Emmys. This list covers the essential dramas that defined two incredible decades of television.

Great raids, some bugs

The new raid content is fantastic with challenging mechanics. However, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out. Overall a solid expansion that keeps me coming back for more.
