Here is a comprehensive guide to direct liquid acrylic marker pens (often called "liquid acrylic markers" or "paint markers"). These are a specific category of art and craft tools that have become extremely popular for their versatility and ease of use. What is a Direct Liquid Acrylic Marker? Unlike a traditional paint marker that uses a ballpoint or needle tip and requires shaking to mix a ball bearing inside, a direct liquid acrylic marker works more like a high-end felt-tip pen. The Mechanism: It has a felt or fiber nib that is directly fed by a liquid acrylic paint reservoir inside the barrel. There is no ball bearing or separate paint tube. The Paint: The paint is a pre-mixed, high-flow, water-based acrylic paint. It's opaque, vibrant, and often water-resistant when dry. The Experience: Because the paint is already liquid (not a thick paste that needs thinning), the flow is consistent, smooth, and requires very little pressure. This makes them feel very similar to using a high-quality marker. Key Features & Benefits Consistent Flow: No shaking required (usually). The paint flows smoothly from the nib without skipping or splattering. High Opacity: They are designed to be opaque, covering dark surfaces (like black paper, wood, or stone) in one or two coats. Versatile Surfaces: They work on a wide range of surfaces without much preparation: - Paper (sketchbooks, cards, mixed media) - Canvas - Wood (raw, painted, or sealed) - Stone, ceramic, glass (permanent when baked or sealed) - Plastic, metal, and leather Permanent When Dry: Once the water evaporates, the acrylic paint forms a permanent, water-resistant, and often lightfast (fade-resistant) layer. Blendable: Because it's wet acrylic, you can blend colors together while they are still wet on a non-porous surface or with a brush and water. No Mess (Usually): Less messy than dipping a brush into paint, but more predictable than spray paint. Popular Brands Posca (by Mitsubishi Pencil): The undisputed king of this category. Posca markers are the gold standard for liquid acrylic markers. They come in a huge range of nib sizes (from ultra-fine 0.7mm to broad 15mm chisel) and hundreds of colors. They are refillable. Molotow One4All: A direct competitor to Posca, also very high quality. Known for their excellent coverage and a wide range of nibs (including a "replacement system" for nibs). They are also refillable and have a larger paint capacity. Montana Acrylic: Popular in the graffiti and street art world. They have a strong, consistent paint and a wide range of nibs. Arrtx, Soucolor, etc.: There are many more affordable, unbranded versions on Amazon. They work well for beginners, but the paint quality, opacity, and nib longevity are generally lower than Posca or Molotow. How to Use Them Prime the Marker: Most new markers have a seal on the nib. Shake the marker with the cap on for about 30 seconds (some brands like Posca require this). Then, press the nib down on a scrap piece of paper until paint flows. Store Tip Down: Always store them horizontally or tip-down to keep the nib moist and the paint ready to flow. Test on Scrap: Always test the marker on a similar surface before your final piece to see the flow and opacity. Layer and Let Dry: Acrylic dries quickly. If you want to add a second color, let the first layer dry completely (usually 30 seconds to a few minutes) to prevent bleeding. Activate Dried Paint: If the nib dries out, you can often re-activate it by dipping the tip in a tiny amount of water or acrylic medium (like Flow-Aid). Tips for Success Shake, Shake, Shake: Even though they are "direct liquid," you still need to shake the marker well to mix the pigment and binder. This is crucial for consistent color and opacity. Don't Press Hard: These markers are meant to be used with light, gliding pressure. Pressing hard can damage the nib and cause the paint to gush out or pool. Cap Immediately: The water in the paint evaporates fast. If you leave the cap off for more than a minute, the nib can dry out and clog. Revive a Dried Marker: If a marker stops working, don't throw it away. Try: - Shaking it more aggressively. - Tapping the nib on a hard surface. - Dipping the nib in warm water or a drop of isopropyl alcohol for a second. - Buying a replacement nib (for premium brands like Posca and Molotow). Seal Your Art: For long-lasting outdoor or high-use projects (like on a skateboard or mug), seal the artwork with a clear acrylic spray sealer or varnish. What are they NOT good for? Fine Line Detail: While they have fine tips (0.7mm), they are not as precise as a technical pen (like a Copic or Micron) for ultra-fine, hair-thin lines. The paint can bleed slightly on absorbent paper. Highly Textured Surfaces: They work best on smooth or slightly porous surfaces. Rough canvas or heavily textured paper will make the nib drag and the paint pool. Fabric (without preparation): While they work on fabric, the paint will stiffen the material and may crack after washing. Use specific fabric paints for clothing. Summary: Direct Liquid Acrylic Markers vs. Other Markers Feature Direct Liquid Acrylic (e.g., Posca) Traditional Paint Marker (e.g., Sharpie Oil-Based) Alcohol Marker (e.g., Copic) : : : : Paint Type Liquid Acrylic (water-based) Oil or Solvent-based Alcohol-based dye/pigment Opacity High, opaque High, opaque Translucent, transparent Permanence Permanent when dry Permanent Not waterproof Smell Low (water-based) Strong (solvent) Strong (alcohol) Blending Blends while wet Hard to blend Excellent for layering/blending Best For Versatile, opaque art on many surfaces Metal, glass, plastic (industrial) Illustration, comics, skin tones In short: If you want a versatile, opaque, easy-to-use paint pen that feels like a marker, a direct liquid acrylic marker (like Posca) is your best bet. It's perfect for customizing, journaling, rock painting, and mixed-media art.

Great raids, some bugs

The new raid content is fantastic with challenging mechanics. However, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out. Overall a solid expansion that keeps me coming back for more.
