"Consensus AI" is a specific, well-regarded AI-powered search engine for academic research. It's designed to help researchers, students, and professionals find and synthesize findings from peer-reviewed scientific papers. Heres a breakdown of what it is, how it works, and its pros and cons. What is Consensus? Unlike ChatGPT or Gemini, which are general-purpose chatbots, Consensus is an evidence-based search engine. You ask a research question (e.g., "Does creatine improve cognitive function in older adults?"), and it searches its index of over 200 million academic papers to find directly relevant studies. It then uses an LLM to summarize the results, often with a clear "Yes," "No," or "Possibly" answer, along with a summary of the evidence. Key Features Direct Answers from Research: It synthesizes findings from multiple papers to give you a direct, actionable answer to your question, not just a list of articles. Copilot (AI Analysis): It generates a summary of the consensus across multiple papers, noting key takeaways and the direction of the evidence. Study Snapshots: For each individual paper, it provides a short, AI-generated summary of the methods, population, sample size, and key findings. This saves immense time reading full papers. Search Filters: You can filter results by: - Study Design: (RCT, Meta-Analysis, Systematic Review, Case Study, etc.) - Journal Quality: (High, Medium, Low) - Population: (Human, Animal, In Vitro) - Date Range: (e.g., last 5 years) Citation & Formatting: Easily copy citations in APA, MLA, Chicago, etc., or export to reference managers like Zotero and Mendeley. "All-in-One" View: Similar to Perplexity, it provides a single page showing the AI's summary, the underlying papers, and a list of the most relevant citations. Easy Reading: It extracts the "Main Takeaways" and "Key Findings" from each paper. How to Use It Ask a clear, specific, research-backed question. Examples: - "What is the effect of mindfulness meditation on blood pressure?" - "Does intermittent fasting improve insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetics?" - "What are the long-term effects of screen time on adolescent mental health?" Avoid vague or opinion-based questions. "Is the death penalty good?" is not a scientific question. Use the filter options to refine your search based on the type of study you trust most (e.g., only Meta-Analyses or Systematic Reviews). Pros & Cons Pros: High Accuracy: Focuses on peer-reviewed research, drastically reducing the risk of hallucination compared to general-purpose LLMs. Time-Saving: Eliminates the need to sift through dozens of irrelevant papers and write your own literature review. Evidence-First: Clearly shows the source of information and allows you to judge the quality of the studies yourself. Transparency: It shows you exactly what studies were used to generate the answer. Cons: Narrow Scope: Only covers peer-reviewed research. It's terrible for general knowledge, current events, or pop culture queries. Not for Every User: If you're just looking for a quick fact check or a simple definition, a regular search engine is faster. Free Tier Limitations: The free version has a limited number of searches per month (often around 30-50). Subscription Required for Full Features: The paid "Pro" version (12/month or 99/year) is required for unlimited searches, full Copilot access, and the "All-in-One" view. Quality Control: While it searches millions of papers, the AI's summary of a single paper can occasionally miss subtle nuances or context. Always verify key claims from the original study. Comparison to Other AI Research Tools Tool Core Function Best For Primary Drawback : : : : Consensus Summarizing evidence from papers Getting a direct answer to a scientific question Limited to peer-reviewed research Perplexity General search with citations Getting a cited answer for any topic Can hallucinate if the web is unreliable Elicit Extracting data from papers Systematic reviews & meta-analyses Steeper learning curve; less user-friendly Scite.ai Analyzing citations Seeing if a paper has been supported or contradicted More complex; requires understanding of citation networks ChatGPT (with web plug-in) General purpose Quick questions, brainstorming Prone to hallucination unless heavily prompted Summary Consensus is an excellent tool for anyone who needs to quickly and reliably understand what scientific research says about a specific question. It's a game-changer for: Graduate students writing literature reviews. Academics needing to check the latest evidence in their field. Healthcare professionals making evidence-based decisions. Journalists fact-checking claims with valid research. Curious individuals who want to base their understanding on solid science. If you need to know "What does the science say?" about a narrow, well-defined topic, Consensus is arguably the best AI tool available. If you need help with a broader, less scientific question, stick with a general-purpose search engine or chatbot.

Great raids, some bugs

The new raid content is fantastic with challenging mechanics. However, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out. Overall a solid expansion that keeps me coming back for more.
