Here is a comprehensive guide to Liquitex Acrylic Markers (often called Liquitex Paint Markers or Professional Acrylic Ink Markers). Liquitex is a premium brand (owned by the same parent company as Winsor & Newton), and their markers are widely considered among the best artist-grade acrylic markers on the market. Here is everything you need to know. The Key Types (Which one are you looking at?) Liquitex makes two distinct marker lines. They are very different, so its crucial to know which you have or need. A. Liquitex Professional Acrylic Ink Markers The Ink: Uses their Professional Acrylic Ink formula. This is a fluid, low-viscosity (watery) acrylic with very fine pigment particles. The Tip: A bullet-point, porous felt tip (like a classic marker). It comes in Fine and Extra Fine. Best For: Drawing, sketching, detailed line work, hand-lettering, layering washes, and journaling. It behaves more like a high-end felt-tip pen than a paint tube. Pros: Smooth flow, no brush strokes, excellent for fine details. Cons: Not great for covering large areas solidly. Not opaque on dark surfaces (it's somewhat transparent). B. Liquitex Professional Paint Markers The Ink: Uses standard Heavy Body or Soft Body acrylic paint, thinned down for marker use. This is a much thicker, opaque, buttery paint. The Tip: A metal tip (reversible, bullet/chisel) or a nylon brush tip. The paint flows through the metal tip. Best For: Painting on canvas, rocks, wood, glass, plastic, sneakers, and murals. Excellent for opaque coverage and impasto (thick) effects. Pros: Extremely opaque (covers black in one coat), archival, can be used like a paintbrush. Cons: Requires shaking, can clog if not capped immediately, tip can be scratched if pressed too hard on rough surfaces. The Technology: The "Valve" System (Crucial!) Unlike a standard Sharpie, the Paint Markers use a "valve" system inside the marker. How it works: Inside the barrel is a small metal ball bearing. When you shake the marker (vigorously, with the cap on), the ball mixes the paint and then presses against a spring-loaded valve. The "Pump" Technique: To start the flow, you press the tip down on a piece of scrap paper (like a pump). You'll hear a "click" and feel the tip depress. This opens the valve, allowing paint to flow into the tip. Tip: If your marker is dry, shake it for 30 seconds (you must hear the ball rattle), then pump the tip 5-10 times on scrap paper. If it still won't flow, the tip might be clogged (see below). The Major Pros (Why Artists Love Them) Archival Quality: They are lightfast, non-yellowing, and flexible. Your art won't fade or crack for decades. Opaque Coverage: The paint markers can cover dark paper, wood, or plastic in one coat. This is the biggest difference vs. Copic or Sharpie. Layering: You can paint a white layer, let it dry, then paint a yellow layer on top without the yellow mixing into the white. This is the magic of acrylic. Mixability: You can draw with a color, then use a wet brush to "smudge" the acrylic ink into a watercolor-like wash. Permanent on Almost Any Surface: Canvas, paper, wood, glass, stone, leather, plastic, metal, fabric (with heat setting). The Major Cons (The Annoying Parts) The Price: They are expensive. Expect to pay 812+ per marker. The Clogging: If you leave the cap off for even 5 minutes, the paint can dry in the tip. A clogged marker is a major frustration. The Shaking: You must shake them vigorously (with the cap on) for 20-30 seconds before every use. If you don't hear the ball rattle, it's dried out or broken. The Smell: While low-VOC, they still have a distinct acrylic paint smell. Not toxic, but not odorless. Not Refillable (Mostly): While you can sometimes pry them open and refill with Liquitex ink, they are designed as disposable markers. Refilling is messy and risky. How to Fix Common Problems "My marker is dry!" 1. Shake it vigorously (with cap on) for 30 seconds. You must hear the metal ball rattle. 2. Pump the tip (press down firmly on scrap paper) 10-15 times. You should see paint start to appear. 3. If still dry, soak the tip in warm water for 30 seconds, then dry it and try again. 4. If the ball is not rattling, the paint has hardened inside. The marker is likely dead. "The tip is scratchy or frayed." - This is normal for the felt-tip ink markers if you press too hard. Replace the tip (Liquitex sells replacement tips) or buy a new marker. - For the paint markers, a scratchy tip often means the tip is clogged with dried paint. Soak in warm water or isopropyl alcohol. "It's leaking." - You shook it too much without the cap on, or the valve is damaged. Store them horizontally or tip-down. Where to Use Them (Surface Guide) Surface Preparation Performance : : : Paper / Canvas None needed Excellent. Standard use. Wood Sand lightly (optional) Excellent. Very permanent. Glass Clean with alcohol Good. Will scratch off eventually. Seal with varnish. Plastic Clean with alcohol Good. Needs a few days to fully cure. Seal for durability. Metal Clean with alcohol Good. Needs a primer for best adhesion. Fabric Wash & dry first Excellent. Heat-set with an iron (cover with cloth) to make washable. Sneakers (Leather/Canvas) Clean with acetone Very popular. Seal with a finisher. Verdict: Should You Buy Them? YES, if: You want permanent, opaque, lightfast artwork. You love acrylic paint but hate cleaning brushes. You want to paint on rocks, sneakers, wood, or glass. You are willing to shake and maintain your markers properly. NO, if: You want a smooth, flowing, "sketchbook" pen like a Copic or Tombow. You are on a tight budget (Sharpie or Posca are cheaper). You have a habit of leaving caps off. Best Alternative (Cheaper & Similar): Posca Paint Markers (by Uni-ball). They are slightly less archival and less "buttery" than Liquitex, but they are significantly cheaper, more widely available, and easier to fix when clogged. Bottom Line: Liquitex markers are the Rolex of acrylic markers. They are professional-grade, brilliant, and archival, but they require careful handling and a higher budget. If you want the absolute best lightfastness and opacity for fine art, they are worth the investment.

Great raids, some bugs

The new raid content is fantastic with challenging mechanics. However, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out. Overall a solid expansion that keeps me coming back for more.
